The ancient method that fights insomnia, ideal for those over 50

Good sleep is considered essential for good physical and mental health, especially as we age.

However, chronic insomnia continues to plague middle-aged and older adults, affecting their daily routine, mood, and quality of life. Year after year, there is growing interest in natural and alternative methods that can improve sleep.

In this regard, Tai Chi, a simple form of exercise that combines slow movements, breathing, and concentration, appears to offer an effective and affordable solution. According to a recent scientific study from Hong Kong, Tai Chi may provide benefits similar to talk therapy for people suffering from chronic insomnia.


Chronic insomnia is one of the most common sleep disorders in these age groups and is associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease, mental disorders, and impaired cognitive functions (logical thinking or memory).

Scientists compared Tai Chi with cognitive therapy in 200 people over 50 who suffered from chronic insomnia. Participants in China attended group Tai Chi classes for 1 hour, twice a week, for 3 months.

At the end of 3 months, the therapy was more effective. However, 1 year later, the long-term effects were impressive: the improvements in sleep of those practicing Tai Chi were almost the same as those of the group receiving psychotherapy. Participants who practiced Tai Chi also noted significant improvements not only in sleep, but also in quality of life, mental health, and physical condition. It is worth noting that no side effects were reported during the study.

The study authors acknowledge that these positive results may be due to the fact that many participants continued to practice Tai Chi after the intervention ended. They emphasize that further research is needed to see whether these benefits apply to other countries with different demographic profiles.

Tai Chi can be a safe, inexpensive, and natural solution for the long-term management of chronic insomnia. A little gentle movement and proper breathing can be the key to better, more quality sleep.

It should be noted that this method dates back thousands of years in China and was originally developed as a form of martial art. Over time, Tai Chi also transformed into a practice for well-being and health.
