Three sleep experts warn about what the couch actually does to your night

Do you ever find yourself falling asleep on the couch after dinner or halfway through a TV series? It may seem harmless, but this habit is one you should try to break as soon as possible. Disrupted cycles, poor conditioning for sleep, and a higher risk of insomnia – dozing off unintentionally can lead to real consequences for your health. Three sleep specialists explain why. 

Many people have experienced this familiar situation: you fall asleep on the living room couch in front of the television after a long day, then wake up and head to bed… only to discover that sleep won’t come back.

But beware. “Falling asleep unintentionally like this is not a good thing,” warns Dr Marc Rey, president of the French National Institute of Sleep and Vigilance. Caroline Rome, a sophrologist specialising in sleep and alertness at the Hôtel Dieu sleep centre in Paris, agrees. “When someone falls asleep like that, overwhelmed by fatigue, they lose control of their sleep – and that’s never a good sign.”

Here is why.

1. It reduces your sleep pressure

Falling asleep on the couch in the evening – especially if it isn’t planned – reduces what specialists call sleep pressure.

In simple terms, sleep pressure is the natural need your body builds up throughout the day to sleep at night. According to Dr Rey, when you briefly fall asleep in the living room and then wake up suddenly to move to your bedroom, you may struggle to fall asleep again.

“When we get home after a long day of work, feeling sleepy is completely normal,” he explains. “But we need to manage sleep the same way we manage food.”

One of the possible consequences is chronic sleep deprivation, because those lost moments of sleep can accumulate over time.

2. You fall asleep in poor conditions

Another problem is the environment in which people usually drift off on the couch. More often than not, it happens in front of a screen – the television, a computer, or even a tablet. And that’s far from ideal.

“It’s very bad to fall asleep in a noisy environment or while exposed to light,” says the specialist.

Our bodies naturally follow a day night rhythm. The hormone melatonin, which regulates sleep, is produced when light levels decrease. Artificial light from screens interferes with this process and can disrupt the body’s natural signals.

There is also the issue of comfort. A couch rarely provides the same support as a proper bed, which means people often fall asleep in awkward positions. And the living room itself is not always an ideal sleep environment.

Sophrologist Christel Neumager, who specialises in sleep in Chantepie near Rennes, highlights this point: “For good sleep quality, it’s important to sleep in a calm, dark room that isn’t cluttered – a peaceful space dedicated specifically to rest.”

3. It disrupts your sleep cycles

Just like meals, sleep works best when it follows a consistent rhythm. When you accidentally fall asleep on the couch, you might wake up a few hours later. This can fragment your sleep and disrupt your internal schedule.

This phenomenon was widely observed during the first lockdown.

“When people remain inactive and lying down all day, their rhythms collapse,” explains Dr Rey. “They doze during the day and then stay awake and stressed at night.”

Maintaining a clear contrast between waking hours and rest is essential for healthy sleep patterns.

Sleep itself follows specific cycles. First comes slow wave sleep, which allows the body to recover physically. Then comes REM sleep, which helps with memory and mental recovery.

“If you interrupt the first cycle, for example, you don’t simply regain it later – your body moves on to the next cycle,” explains Christel Neumager.

4. It disrupts your conditioning for sleep

Falling asleep in the living room instead of your bedroom can also weaken the mental cues your body associates with sleep.

“We are conditioned for sleep,” explains Caroline Rome. “When you enter your bedroom, your body prepares to sleep. It’s the same way entering the kitchen prepares you to eat.”

If you regularly fall asleep on the couch, these signals become blurred. As a result, the brain may no longer associate the bedroom as strongly with sleep, which can lead to poorer rest overall.

5. It can affect your health

Poor or irregular sleep has clear consequences for overall health.

According to Marc Rey, disrupted sleep can contribute to obesity, weaken the immune system, and increase feelings of irritability or low mood.

Sleep disorders also affect alertness and concentration during the day. Physically, the body does not recover properly.

6. It may reveal a sleep debt

Finally, falling asleep unintentionally on the couch may simply mean one thing: you are extremely tired.

“People who fall asleep like this often have a sleep debt,” explains Christel Neumager.

The key is learning to recognise signs of fatigue and listening to your body’s need for sleep. Ideally, you should go to bed as soon as that need appears.

It is also worth remembering that everyone’s sleep needs are different. Some people function perfectly on six hours of sleep, while others require nine hours to feel fully rested.

From doomscrolling to poor sleep: Areas that could lead to cognitive decline identified

A February 2026 report on risk-increasing behaviour among young adults identified doomscrolling and AI’s cognitive offloading as the habits that can severely increase brain aging. 

These findings come from the industry group Ben’s Natural Health, who have documented behavioural trends among young adults and assessed their potential health and psychological risks.

The key findings from the review are:

  • Doomscrolling increases the chances of insomnia by 59%, while sleep deprivation is linked to a higher risk of dementia.
  • The faster cognitive decline is connected to the diet based on ultra-processed foods and high reliance on fast food and sugary drinks.
  • Chronic urban exposure to air and noise pollution can lead to a 14% increase in dementia risks.

‘Revenge’ Bedtime Scrolling or Doomscrolling

‘Revenge’ social media scrolling in bed is very common now, as people try to catch up on the missed relaxation time, but the long-term effects of this habit carry significant risk. Each hour spent staring at screens in bed increases the likelihood of insomnia by 59% and leads to less sleep overall. These hours catch up fast, upping the chances of dementia in the future.

Chronic insomnia and cognitive decline share a bidirectional relationship, where poor sleep accelerates cognitive impairment, and cognitive decline can worsen sleep.

The full impact is:

  • Insomnia risk increase: 59%
  • Less sleep: 24 minutes on average
  • Long-term effects: increased dementia risk

AI Cognitive Offloading

While making AI write first drafts, schedules, and even big decisions saves time, experts warn that the constant habit of it reduces critical thinking skills. Evidence suggests that over-reliance on Artificial Intelligence (AI) can lead to a form of cognitive decline, often referred to as “cognitive atrophy,” particularly affecting critical thinking, memory retention, and problem-solving skills.

Without the routine problem-solving that AI presence removes, the human brain doesn’t get enough activity that can lead to a faster cognitive decline.

Sitting All Day

Even when paired with gym and regular exercise, sedentary behaviour increases dementia risks by 17% on average. Long sitting coupled with TV-viewing almost doubles the chances, increasing them to 31%.

Ultra-Processed Foods (UPF) as the Default Diet 

A large study of almost 11,000 adults found the link between UPF consumption and executive function decline. Impaired executive function means difficulty with cognitive skills that control planning, organizing, decision-making, and emotional regulation, leading to struggles with daily tasks like starting projects, managing time, staying focused, controlling impulses, and adapting to changes.

Fast food, sugary drinks, and packaged snacks are rich in UPF ingredients, and eating them daily affects not only people’s stomachs but also the blood vessels in their brains.

Chronic Urban Exposure

The urban environment is an unavoidable reality for millions of people, but it also affects dementia risks every day. Systematic reviews of medical studies found that both noise and light pollution are connected to raised dementia risks, and constant noise exposure to traffic increases it by around 14%.

Undertreated Hearing Loss

With modern technology able to raise the sound volume to almost any level, many adults miss the first signs of hearing loss. Without assessment, risks increase fast, and hearing intervention slows the cognitive decline (by up to 48% in just 3 years).

The best side to sleep on to stop your insomnia and snoring

A recent sleep study has revealed the best side to sleep on, with experts explaining the benefits of each side depending on individual health concerns. The study involved a group of healthy individuals and examined left and right-side sleeping patterns, as well as frequency of tossing and turning.

The study involved people wearing a flexible sensor system which was developed to monitor sleeping positions and turning frequency, and how it impacted sleep quality. This device, which includes a flexible angle sensor and a six-axis motion sensor, was tested on 13 healthy subjects over 15 nights, comprising seven males and six females.

Participants wore the device in conjunction with a wristband sleep monitor and completed sleep questionnaires. It was also noted that none of the participants had any sleep disorders.

Is the left or right side the best to sleep on?

The results showed that what position you like to sleep in affects the quality of your sleep. People who preferred lying on their right side are said to turn less frequently experience better sleep. The researchers noted that "subjects with a right-sided preference experienced the fewest awakenings."

The study reads: "They performed more than 50 sleeping-position changes to ensure the accuracy of the monitoring device. Subjects slept in their beds for 8 h per night for 15 nights.

"The results show that the most critical influencing factors are sleeping-position preference and frequency of turning. Data analysis reveals that subjects with a preference for right-sided lying and a lower frequency of turning had better sleep quality."

Which side should I sleep on to stop snoring?

The Sleep Foundation has revealed that whilst the side you sleep on is largely a matter of preference, either position can help reduce snoring and back pain. It can also lower the risk of sleep apnea and improve overall health.

So, if you're looking to stop snoring, try to avoid sleeping on your back. The experts explain that when you sleep on your back, your tongue can easily fall back into your throat, creating an obstruction that can lead to snoring.

Sleeping on your side allows your airways to remain open, making snoring less likely. In fact, sleeping on the left side may be particularly beneficial for those who are pregnant or suffer from gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), as it improves blood flow between the heart, fetus, uterus, and kidneys, while relieving pressure on the liver.

Why is sleep important?

The study explains that whilst we all know sleep is crucial for our health and recovery to allow us to restart again the next day, a lack of sleep is "associated with a variety of health problems, including cardiovascular disease, stroke, incidental arterial calcification, and changes in inflammatory markers.

"Chronic sleep deprivation raises the risk of developing cardiovascular disease, obesity, and impaired glucose regulation, all of which impair judgment and cognition."

Warning over common sitting position that can lead to headaches, anxiety and insomnia

If you work at a desk, you'll know that a lot of your day is spent sitting down. But the wrong posture can lead to some pretty unpleasant health consequences over time.

Health experts have warned that daily bad posture can lead to a range of negative effects on our mind and body, including headaches, insomnia, and even anxiety and depression.

And there's one very common sitting position that people are being urged to avoid if they want to improve their overall health.

Dr Deborah Lee from Dr Fox Online Pharmacy issued a warning to anyone who works at a desk, highlighting that sitting with a lowered neck can wreak havoc on your posture.

This was echoed by Dr. Stefan Mindea, MD who explained that this can cause strain on the spine. He said: "When the head is tilted forward—commonly known as "tech neck"—the effective weight of the head increases exponentially due to the angle.

"For example, at a 30° forward tilt, the head's weight feels like 40 pounds to the neck. This unnatural strain leads to muscle fatigue, headaches, and chronic neck pain."

Poor posture can trigger a number of different side effects over time, according to Deborah. One of these is 'severe and throbbing' headaches, due to prolonged tension in the head, neck and spine.

This tension or inability to relax can also lead to insomnia, since the neck and back pain that's often experienced can make it very difficult to switch off at night.

Anxiety and depression can be another side effect, with studies showing that slumping in a chair can make negative thoughts appear easier, bringing on feelings of anxiety and putting a dampener on your mood.

What is the best sitting position?

To make sure you're sitting correctly, warding off these unpleasant symptoms, Dr Deborah recommends the 'S' position, which ensures your muscles in your spine aren't being pulled by gravity.

Here's a step-by-step guide on how to achieve this.

  • Sit facing forward with your feet flat on the floor. This may mean altering the height of your chair as you should not sit with your feet dangling or your knees bunched up

  • Your knees should be at the same height as your hips

  • Your ankles should be slightly in front of your knees

  • Keep your back in contact with the back of the chair, using a cushion if needed
